The Line

Supermarket Store Shelves That Shape the Whole Sales Floor

Gondola shelving is the backbone of any supermarket layout: a free standing steel frame where each gondola shelf clips in at an adjustable height, run single sided against a wall or as double sided gondola shelving down the middle of an aisle. Buyers also call these supermarket shelves, supermarket store shelves or simply store shelving, and the terms all describe the same system. JTD Jinta builds Lozier compatible, hole back and S50 systems in metal, all with adjustable shelf pitch and customisable colour and branding. Minimum order is 20 units and lead time runs 10 to 30 days.

Buyer FAQ

Supermarket Gondola Shelving Questions

What is supermarket shelving called?

The trade calls a free standing bay a gondola; against a wall it is a wall gondola or single sided run, and down the middle of an aisle it is a double sided or island run. End caps are the short display units capping each run. Knowing these four words is enough to brief any shelving supplier.

What are the different types of retail shelves?

Four cover most stores: flat shelf bays for boxed and canned stock, perforated or slotted back panels for hooks and blister packs, hanging rails for apparel, and sloped or basket shelves for produce. They share the same uprights, so one run can mix them and be re-pitched as the planogram changes.

How much does gondola shelving cost?

Cost per bay follows upright height, shelf depth, steel gauge and shelves per bay — not brand. A run also gets cheaper per metre as it grows, because adjoining bays share uprights. Two costs buyers forget are the end caps, which cost more per unit than a standard bay, and the freight difference between flat-packed and pre-assembled. Send a floor plan and we quote per metre of run with container loading.

Can shelving be made to my store layout?

Yes, every run we ship is built to drawing. Bay width, upright height, shelf pitch, back panel type, colour and header branding are all specified per order. Minimum order is 20 units and delivery runs 10-30 days after the drawing is signed off.

What is the difference between a gondola and a shelf?

A shelf is one horizontal surface; a gondola is the whole free standing structure that carries them — base, uprights, back panel and brackets. You buy gondolas by the bay and shelves by the piece, which is worth getting right when you compare quotes.
